DePuy ASR Hip System
Hip System Background:
The ASR Hip System is manufactured by DePuy Orthopaedics, Inc, a Johnson & Johnson company. The ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System works by replacing the ball portion of the hip and has a metal stem that connects to the top of the hip bone. The ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System was launched in 2003 and is sold outside the U.S.A. Meanwhile, the ASR™ XL Acetabular System was launched in 2004 and is sold worldwide. The Acetabular System uses a concave metal piece to provide a smooth lining for the acetabulum. The acetabulum is the bowl-shaped socket within the pelvis.
Medical Response:
In 2009 DePuy decided to discontinue the ASR™ Hip System. On August 26, 2010 DePuy announced a voluntary recall of the ASR™ XL Acetabular System and DePuy ASR™ Hip Resurfacing System. The recall was implemented due to the high number of second hip replacement procedures known as revision surgeries.
Hip System Problems:
The ASR™ products cause high levels of metal ions to be released in the patients. The metal ions have a detrimental effect on the surrounding tissue, often requiring revision surgeries. The highest rate of revision occurred in female patients and with ASR™ head sizes below 50 mm in diameter. Five years after implantation, 1-in-8 patients with an ASR™ implant required a revision surgery. A 2010 report from the National Joint Registry of England and Wales confirmed a revision rate of 12% - 13% for the ASR™ product line.
Potential Symptoms:
Some of the reported symptoms include:
- Unexpected Hip,Thigh or Groin Pain
- Pain with Walking
- Pain Rising from a Seated Position
- Crunching Sound During Hip Movement
