Zimmer Durom Hip Cup
Hip Cup Background:
The manufacturer of the defective hip cup implant is Zimmer, Inc. The Durom Hip Cup is a hip ball-and-socket replacement joint. It is manufactured from metals including cobalt and chromium. The hip cup is known as a “metal on metal” implant, because both the socket and ball are made of metal. These “metal on metal” hip cup implants can cause severe tissue and bone damage. Studies have shown that these devices can begin to quickly wear and generate high volumes of metallic debris. The metallic debris is absorbed into the patient’s body. The absorbed debris can cause inflammatory reactions that cause pain in the groin, death of tissue in the hip joint and loss of surrounding bone.
Medical Response:
The medical profession in the U.S. noticed that the Durom Hip Cup had an “elevated revision rate” compared with other forms of hip implants. The revisions include “reports of cup loosening and revisions of the acetabular component used in total hip replacement procedures.” Furthermore, many patients have suffered inflamed tissue, the death and/or loss of hip tissue and bone. In July 2008, Zimmer suspended U.S. sales of the Durom Hip Cup. It is estimated that 12,000 U.S. patients received the Durom Hip Cup implant.
Hip Cup Problems:
Due to the hip cup implant’s premature wearing a large amount of metallic debris is created within the body and is absorbed by the patient. The metallic debris can cause inflammatory reactions, death of tissue in the hip joint and loss of surrounding bone.
