NuvaRing
NuvaRing Background:
NuvaRing is a form of birth control manufactured by Organon Pharmaceuticals. NuvaRing is a flexible vaginal ring that is inserted into the vagina once a month. During a three week process, NuvaRing releases a controlled amount of ethinyl estradiol and etonogestrel. These hormones prevent pregnancy. The release of etonogestrel, which is known as a third generation progestin desogestrel, has been linked to serious health problems.
FDA Response:
NuvaRing has been marketed heavily throughout the world. Yet, studies dating back to 1995 have shown an increased risk of blood clots in contraceptives containing desogestrel. In November of 1995, the FDA acknowledged this by stating “new studies indicate about a two-fold increase in the risk of venous blood clots associated with products containing desogestrel.”
NuvaRing Problems:
You may have been harmed by NuvaRing if you have suffered the following:
- Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
- Pulmonary Embolism (PE)

- Stroke
- Sudden Death
