Zicam
Zicam Background:
Zicam is manufactured by Matrixx Initiatives, Inc. Zicam is a popular over the counter (non-prescription) zinc nasal spray or swab. Zicam is marketed as a homepathic drug that shortens the duration of the common cold. Many consumers reported the loss of smell after just one dose. Other consumers have reported the loss of smell after multiple uses of Zicam products. Zinc, the active ingredient within Zicam, can permanently damage olfactory nerve receptors needed for smell.
Zicam Marketing:
On June 16, 2009, the FDA alerted consumers "that Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel, Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs, and Zicam Cold Remedy Swabs, Kids Size, a discontinued product that consumers may still have in their homes, have all been associated with longlasting or permanent loss of smell (referred to as anosmia)." The FDA issued the warning because "[w]e are concerned that consumers may unknowingly use a product that could cause serious harm, and therefore we are advising them not to use these products for any reason."

You may have been harmed by Zicam if you have suffered the following:
